Aldridge Cricket Academy student Will Sheffield has been named in the 13-strong Sussex County Cricket Club first team to play their opening Championship match of the season at Edgbaston on Friday (13th April). 17-year-old Will impressed on the County’s pre-season tour to Cape Town and is called up to replace injured first-teamer Abi Sakand.
A left-arm swing bowler and useful lower-order batsman, Will combines his sixth form studies with a dedicated cricket programme at Brighton Aldridge Community Academy (BACA). Sussex Cricket has close links with BACA. The Aldridge Foundation sponsors Sussex Cricket’s boys and girls junior and Academy squads and Sussex Women and the state-of-the-art Sir Rod Aldridge Cricket Centre at BACA’s Falmer campus is home to Sussex’s girls and women’s sides. Sussex also share expertise with the Aldridge Cricket Academy on all aspects of cricket from coaching to grounds-keeping, including sharing a strength and conditioning coach.
If he plays Will will be the first Aldridge student to represent the county in the men’s game, following Tara Norris, who first played for Sussex Women as an ACA student in 2016.
