Open evening for new sixth form dance course

Date: April 19th 2016

Aspiring dance students in Sussex are invited to attend two open evenings to learn more about a career in dance with the newly launched sixth form course run by South East Dance and the Brighton and Portslade Aldridge Community Academies. The open evenings will take place on Tuesday 26 April at Brighton Aldridge Community Academy (BACA) and Wednesday 27 April at Portslade Aldridge Community Academy (PACA).

The Aldridge South East Dance Academy is a unique collaboration between education and the dance industry, giving students the opportunity to study for a BTEC National Extended Diploma in Performing Arts (Dance), the equivalent of 3 A levels. The Academy will be the only centre in Brighton offering this qualification, with students combining academic studies with choreography and performance technique and the opportunity to work with respected members of the dance industry.

The sixth formers will be able to choose from a wide range of disciplines to study, including contemporary, jazz, ballet, tap, musical theatre, urban and street dance, learning from and having access to a network of dance and performing arts industry experts. There will be opportunities to perform in Brighton and beyond, through the Academy’s network of industry partners.

Cath James, Programme Director, South East Dance said: “This course brings the truly exciting prospect of a unique and trailblazing approach to dance education and training beginning right there in Brighton and we’re absolutely delighted to be involved. Developed from the forefront of dance industry expertise, the new curriculum will create dance opportunities of the highest quality so that more young people can not only fulfil their creative potential, but also enjoy the exhilaration and health benefits of dance.”

Itziar Leighton, Director of 16-19 Education, Brighton and Portslade Aldridge Community Academies, said: “This unique collaboration between education and industry ignites a passion for learning and ensures that each one of our learners is given every opportunity to achieve their full potential.

The success of our other specialist sixth form academies at PACA and BACA, such as the Aldridge Cricket Academy in partnership with Sussex County Cricket, has demonstrated how a strong collaboration with industry partners can provide learners with invaluable and exciting access to leading industry experts, resources and facilities to support their future careers and ambitions.”

The Aldridge South East Dance Academy will open doors to its first cohort of students in September 2016. Any students, parents, dance teachers and performers interested in hearing more and meeting the team behind the Academy can come to one of the open evenings.
