Earlier this year Porstlade Aldridge Community Academy Vice Principal Chris Mellett gave into requests from his students to shave his beard off, on one condition. He challenged Leanne Coltherd, Kaitlin Emery and Daniella Birchley that if they could lead the academy in fundraising £2,500 for East Sussex charity Children with Cancer Fund (Polegate) he would do the deed at the end of summer term.
At today’s prize giving assembly there was great excitement as the girls announced to the assembled school that they had in fact raised over £3,200, and at the end of the prize giving Mr Mellett duly took his seat in the hastily arranged barber’s chair. The girls each got to clip off a chunk of the luxuriant beard, which had been 10 years in the making, before “Alphonso the Barber”, aka PACA teacher Mike Jones in a blond wig and apron, stepped in to shave off the rest – to great cheers from the students and fellow staff members.
Mr Mellett’s reaction. “We’re are very proud of the considerable amount of fundraising and volunteering for local causes that PACA students do, and to raise over £3,000 for Children with Cancer Fund is great.” And asked how it felt to be clean shaven after so long …. “very odd…..and very cold!”.
