Triple Joy For UTC Siblings

Date: August 15th 2019

Three teenagers from the same family studying at UTC@MediaCityUK are celebrating an outstanding clutch of results today.

Twins Charlotte and David Hughes both scored triple Distinction Star grades in Level 3 TV & Film Production, and their older brother Kieran received two Distinction grades and one Merit in Interactive Media and Gaming.

All three students have attended the UTC for four years, joining the 14-19 media college in Year 10.

“Studying TV & Film from year 10 gave me a head start” says Charlotte, 18, “I am so pleased to have received a place at a red brick University after doing a combination of BTEC, A-Levels and an extended project qualification at UTC. Being a student at UTC@MediaCityUK gave me enough time, flexibility and support to write my first novel, which is a great start to my degree in English literature and creative writing at Manchester University”.

Her brothers agree. “It was a big decision to move schools in Year 10, especially as the UTC was a new college” says David, “but I have never looked back. The location in the heart of MediaCityUK is just perfect for the college specialisms, we have had access to the digital media sector in a way that just wouldn’t have happened in a traditional school The fabulous technical facilities and industry expertise of the staff means I have learned the practical skills I need to be a media professional, as well as the academic know-how.”

“Once I knew that the college offered game design qualifications at GCSE and A Level standard, I just knew that I had to join” adds Kieran, “and the college environment really suited me.  I have gained loads of confidence as well as skills, and these are what helped me to secure an unconditional offer from Salford University to study for a BSc in digital business.

The siblings’ mother, Rachel Hughes, said “we knew from the start that sending our three children to a technical college would prepare them for life after college and the world of work. We are delighted that their experience at UTC has exceeded our expectations, given them outstanding opportunities to be creative and to turn this creativity into entrepreneurship. Three young adults ready and excited for their next steps. Thank you to all the UTC staff; we will miss you!”

The UTC is a mainstream 14-19 college that offers specialist learning and practical experience in creative and digital subjects right in the heart of MediaCityUK. Sixth form students can study approved Level 3 courses in TV and film production, game design, and digital publishing, and also have the opportunity to enrol for a range of complementary A Level courses.

UTC Principal Ruth Bradbury, said:

“This year’s results continue to show that the UTC is the natural choice for young people who are determined to have a career in the creative digital sector.  I am delighted for all of our students, and I know that we have ensured that they are in the strongest possible position to succeed in a very competitive market. This is an absolutely unique place to study and to work: we have prestigious TV and tech companies right on our doorstep, and our staff and students get so many amazing opportunities.”
