UTC@MediaCityUK Announces Principal Designate and CEO

The UTC@MediaCityUK has appointed Jon Corner as its chief executive and Anne Casey as principal designate.

Corner, currently chief executive of The Landing MediaCityUK and chair of RiverMotion Group, will join the college on a part time basis until the UTC opens to students in September 2014.

Prior to The Landing, he was part of the project team that helped shape the original concept of MediaCityUK, including the bid to attract the BBC.

He was later the University of Salford’s director of MediaCityUK

 

Anne CaseyCasey, who will take-up her full-time post with immediate effect, has extensive experience in leading and teaching in secondary ICT education and the use of ICT to enhance teaching and learning. She is currently the head of ICT at the Education Funding Agency, part of the Department for Education.

The appointments were made by the UTC’s board of trustees, which comprises representatives from The Aldridge Foundation, The Lowry, Salford City College and Salford University.

Commenting on his appointment, Jon Corner said: “MediaCityUK is a world-renowned digital hub and, for anyone looking to develop a career in creative content and technology, there isn’t a better place to be. The UTC’s neighbours are professionals at the very top of their game and, when we open our doors in September 2014, it is with the industry support of key players such as ITV, Dock 10 and Adobe.”

Anne Casey said: “UTCs are one of the most exciting things to ever happen to the UK education system. By providing a technical education that meets the needs of modern employers, we will be able to work with our students to ensure they make the move from education to employment in a growing industry they’re passionate about as quickly and as easily as possible.”

The UTC at MediaCityUK is one of 27 around the UK currently preparing to open its doors – and will join the 17 already up and running.

It will offer young people(14+) the opportunity to develop the practical skills required for those looking to enter the creative and digital sector, combining formal qualifications (GCSE, A level and BTEC) with the technical and entrepreneurial skills valued by the creative, media and digital industries.

It will open to students in September 2014 in, high quality learning spaces in MediaCityUK, including the University of Salford’s state of the art TV and Edit studios, before moving into new purpose-built premises at MediaCityUK in 2015. Admissions are already being accepted and prospective students will have a chance to meet Jon Corner at the UTC’s next open evening on Monday, 16 December from 6.30pm at The Landing.

Since issuing this release the opening date of the UTC has moved to September 2015.
