Sharon Gardner joined the opening team of the UTC as Director of Teaching and Progress before succeeding Founding Principal Anne Casey when she was appointed Deputy Director for the Regional Schools Commissioner North West.
Before joining the UTC Sharon was previously Assistant Headteacher with responsibility for monitoring Teaching and Learning at Walkden High School, Salford for six years. Through extensive staff training, monitoring and evaluation she has contributed significantly to improving the quality of Teaching and Learning at the school. During this time, she led the school’s professional development programme for all staff, including Newly Qualified teachers. She has also coordinated Local Authority training day events.
Prior to this she led a large, successful English department of 17 staff at Turton High School, Bolton which consistently achieved excellent results at GCSE and A Level. Whilst Head of English she led a cluster of schools in sharing good practice for teaching English.
Sharon Gardner began her teaching career as an English teacher in Bromley, South London, teaching at two large comprehensives. In her second school she set up the Media Department. Sharon has been an examiner for A Level English and Media.
On her appointment Sharon said: “Central to the vision of the UTC is the desire to prepare young people better for employment and further education and training, that is why we offer students opportunities through work experience and leadership activities. Since opening in September 2015 we have seen the vision and values of the UTC come to life. The young people who study here are growing in confidence daily, their communication and leadership skills are being developed through their frequent team work as they create projects to fulfil briefs set with industry partners.”
